In honor of Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating all the yogi moms out there—shout out to being seriously strong women and amazing role models! We asked some of the yogis who inspire us every day how their practice helps them in motherhood, what lessons they’re passing down to their children, and their favorite asanas to do together. Prepare for cuteness overload.

What lessons have you learned from yoga that you now teach to your kids?

Yoga has brought me more in touch with my breath, which, in turn, brings me into the here and now. I find myself doing breathing exercises with my kids quite often. It makes such a huge difference in their mood and behavior, and they become more focused in the present moment as well.

How has your yoga practice helped you in motherhood?

The moment my son came into my life, my heart expanded, and I became overwhelmingly aware of the endlessness of it. It brought up a lot of fear and a lot of doubt, but I continued to practice daily—for myself, but also because I love my son, and I want to be lit up for him. Practicing with him in my heart and sometimes literally on it fuels me, ignites me and sets my soul on fire.

How has your yoga practice helped you in motherhood?

Yoga has made me include my children in my fitness and at-home practice like never before. They are always around, and I love that they know mommy takes time to do her “exercises and yogas” each morning. At the same time, they know they are welcome and encouraged to play around me, talk to me and even do yoga with me. Yoga has also taught me that if I can be patient with myself, I most certainly can work on being more patient with my children.

What lessons have you learned from yoga that you now teach to your kids?

You can do anything—you just have to work for it. That it’s important to be balanced and healthy, and also not to judge people. We’re all on our own journeys, and most of us are just trying the best we can; in fact, we must assume that.

How have your yoga practices helped you in motherhood?

One of the casualties of motherhood is neglecting yourself, your needs, your time, your space. Yoga has given us a way to stay connected to ourselves while supporting our children and giving them all the attention and love they deserve. Our yoga practices fill us with the gratitude that fuels our journey through motherhood.

What lessons have you learned from yoga that you now teach to your kids?

One of the most important lessons that yoga has taught us is contentment—to be satisfied with who and where you are in this life. We strive to share this value with our children. The lack of contentment is the root of so many insecurities when growing up. We hope that by sharing this lesson with them, they form a strong foundation to grow from.

What lessons have you learned from yoga that you now teach to your son?

It’s important to be patient, with ourselves as much as with others. The beauty more often lies in the journey to the destination than the destination itself—enjoy that journey no matter how long it takes.

How has your yoga practice helped you in motherhood?

Yoga brings me clarity, keeps me calm and helps keep things in perspective. When plans go out the window, I take a deep breath and roll with it. When 4-month-old Koa is having a fussy day, I stay patient. Late night feedings can take a toll, but once I step on to my mat, it all melts away. I am reminded of what is really important in life: family, health and love.

How has your yoga practice helped you in motherhood?

It’s safe to say I’d be a wreck if it weren’t for my yoga practice during pregnancy, delivery and postpartum. When my water broke eight weeks early in Germany, I had my yoga practice to thank for keeping me calm during an extremely stressful time. Meditation and pranayama were a godsend. Having your baby unexpectedly in a foreign country isn’t ideal, but I felt present and grounded during the experience because of my long-term consistent yoga practice.

Favorite yoga pose to do with your son?

Savasana (aka cuddling).

How has your yoga practice helped you in motherhood?

One aspect of my yoga practice that has helped me transition into motherhood is my the ability to focus and control my breathing. In the midst of difficult situations, it can be easy to let exhaustion and stress cloud the mind. By focusing on my breathing techniques, I’m able to adjust my frame of mind and center myself.
