7 Detoxifying Asanas to Help You Start Fresh
Want to flow into fall feeling refreshed and inspired? We rounded up some great asanas for cleansing the body and mind, from twists that aid in digestion and detoxification to inversions that literally get the blood flowing (and stimulate the lymphatic system, which is great for your immune system!). Add one or all to your yoga practice, and we bet you’ll be feeling a little brighter inside and out.
Listen to your body and do what feels right. Maybe that means starting with a simple restorative twist, like this open-armed Malasana variation, and gradually working towards greater lengthening and a deeper stretch.
Lotus opens the hips and calms the mind, so you can increase flexibility and practice mindfulness at the same time. Try meditating in this pose to receive maximum restorative benefits. Less stress means more room to release!
Utthita Parsvakonasana (Extended Side Angle)
An essential asana for creating more space in the body, extended side angle stretches the chest, spine, waist, knees and ankles for increased flexibility and greater strength.
Ardha Matsyendrasana (Half Lord of the Fishes)
Find this key twist whenever you want to stretch the hips, neck and shoulders, strengthen the spine and stimulate digestion.
Urdhva Dhanurasana (Wheel)
This amazing heart-opener helps with circulation, releases stale energy, strengthens the body and even improves your mood! Perfect for anyone who sits at a desk all day and wants to counteract bad posture. To make it more advanced, alternate lifting each leg in the air and work your way down to the forearms.
Viparita Virabhadrasana (Reverse Warrior)
Open your heart and release tension around the ribs with the fundamental reverse warrior pose, and reap the cleansing benefits by taking it into a twist, like in this half-bound reverse warrior variation.
A great twist for detoxification and digestion, crooked monkey stretches the hips and works the quads and abs.
